For several seconds, she couldn’t speak.
“My father died thirty years ago.”
The agent shook his head.
“No body was ever found.”
Richard immediately interrupted.
“This is ridiculous.”
The agent looked at him.
“Mr. Cole, you should probably stop talking.”
Richard’s face changed.
Elena folded her arms.
Maya asked:
“What evidence?”
The agent handed her a printed still frame.
It showed an elderly man entering a private bank in Geneva three weeks earlier.
Gray hair.
Bent posture.
Older face.
But unmistakable eyes.
Maya looked at Elena.
Elena whispered:
“Arthur.”
Maya shook her head.
“No.”
The agent continued.
“He used an account connected to Vale Media.”
Richard stared at the image.
Then looked away too quickly.
Elena noticed.
“You knew.”
Richard snapped:
“No.”
Elena stepped toward him.
“You knew Arthur was alive.”
“I didn’t.”
“Then why did you just recognize him?”
Richard said nothing.
Maya looked at him.
“You knew.”
Richard sat down slowly.
The agent pulled out another file.
“Mr. Cole received twelve wire transfers from a Swiss foundation between 2001 and 2018.”
Elena stared at Richard.
“How much?”
The agent answered:
“Four-point-six million dollars.”
Maya looked at Richard.
“You were being paid?”
Richard whispered:
“It wasn’t like that.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Richard finally broke.
“Arthur paid me.”
Everyone froze.
Maya stepped closer.
“For what?”
Richard stared at the desk.
“To keep him dead.”
Elena’s face changed.
“What does that mean?”
Richard looked at her.
“Arthur planned the disappearance.”
Maya stared.
“No.”
Richard continued.
“He knew the company was compromised.”
“He knew people were watching him.”
“So he staged everything.”
Elena whispered:
“And me?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“You weren’t supposed to go to prison.”
Elena’s face hardened.
“I spent twenty-eight years in a cell.”
Richard nodded.
“I know.”
Elena slapped the table with both hands.
“THEN EXPLAIN IT.”
Richard looked at her.
“My father panicked.”
The room fell silent.
“James Cole realized Arthur’s disappearance would trigger an investigation.”
“So he needed someone blamed.”
Elena stared at Richard.
“And you gave him me.”
Richard looked ashamed.
“I edited your recording.”
Maya whispered:
“You destroyed her life to protect your father.”
Richard said:
“I was twenty-seven.”
Elena stared at him.
“You were old enough to know exactly what you were doing.”
Richard looked away.
The FBI agent interrupted.
“There’s more.”
Everyone turned.
He opened another folder.
“Arthur Vale did not stay hidden for thirty years because he was afraid.”
Maya frowned.
“Then why?”
The agent placed several documents on the console.
“Because he was building a case.”
Elena stared.
“Against who?”
The agent answered:
“Everyone.”
Vale Media executives.
Politicians.
Lawyers.
Bankers.
And one radio journalist.
Richard went pale.
Maya looked at him.
“You.”
The agent nodded.
Richard stood.
“I want a lawyer.”
Elena smiled coldly.
“Now you want due process?”
Richard said nothing.
The agent continued:
“Arthur has been sending evidence anonymously for years.”
Maya stared.
“Then why come back now?”
The agent looked at her.
“Because one person was never supposed to discover the truth.”
Maya’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
The agent looked straight at her.
“You.”
Elena frowned.
“Why?”
The agent hesitated.
Then looked toward Richard.
Richard whispered:
“Don’t.”
Maya turned.
“Don’t what?”
Richard looked terrified.
“Don’t tell her.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Tell her what?”
The agent sighed.
“Arthur Vale isn’t Maya’s biological father.”
Maya stared.
Elena froze.
“What?”
The agent pulled out a sealed lab report.
“DNA testing was completed yesterday.”
Maya looked at Elena.
“Then who is?”
Elena’s face was completely blank.
The agent looked at Richard.
Maya slowly followed his eyes.
“No.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Maya stepped backward.
“No.”
Elena whispered:
“Richard?”
Richard’s voice shook.
“It happened once.”
Elena slapped him.
Maya covered her mouth.
Elena stared at Richard with hatred.
“You?”
Richard nodded.
Maya’s knees almost gave out.
“The man who sent my mother to prison…”
Her voice broke.
“…is my father?”
Richard said nothing.
The FBI agent continued:
“And Arthur knew.”
Everyone looked at him.
“He discovered Maya wasn’t his.”
Elena whispered:
“When?”
“Two weeks before he disappeared.”
Richard looked sick.
Maya stared.
“So this entire thing…”
Richard interrupted:
“No.”
Maya shouted:
“DON’T.”
The room went quiet.
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“You framed my mother.”
“You lied to me.”
“You hired me.”
Richard looked at her.
Maya suddenly understood.
“You hired me because you knew.”
Richard nodded.
“I wanted to be close to you.”
Maya stared at him.
“For ten years?”
“Yes.”
Elena whispered:
“You watched my daughter grow up while I was in prison.”
Richard started crying.
Elena looked disgusted.
Then the FBI agent’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Everyone watched him.
He ended the call.
Maya asked:
“What happened?”
The agent looked at her.
“Arthur Vale just landed at JFK.”
The room went silent.
Elena covered her mouth.
Maya whispered:
“He came back?”
The agent nodded.
“But he isn’t coming here.”
Maya frowned.
“Where is he going?”
The agent looked at Richard.
“To see James Cole.”
Richard froze.
Elena stared.
“Richard’s father is alive?”
Richard looked at the floor.
Maya slowly turned toward him.
“You told everyone he died twelve years ago.”
Richard said nothing.
The agent answered for him.
“James Cole never died.”
Elena stared in disbelief.
The agent continued:
“He has been living under federal protection.”
Maya whispered:
“Why?”
The agent looked at Richard.
“Because James Cole agreed to testify.”
Richard’s face collapsed.
Elena asked:
“Against who?”
The agent looked directly at Richard.
“His son.”
Richard backed away from the desk.
And then every screen in the radio studio suddenly switched to the same live feed.
An elderly man stepped out of a black SUV outside a federal courthouse.
Arthur Vale.
Alive.
Beside him—
an even older man.
James Cole.
Maya stared at the screen.
Then Arthur stopped in front of the cameras.
A reporter shouted:
“Mr. Vale, why come forward now?”
Arthur looked directly into the lens.
And said:
“Because Richard Cole destroyed two families to hide one crime.”
The reporters exploded with questions.
Arthur raised one hand.
Then added:
“And tonight, I’m going to prove he wasn’t the only one involved.”
Richard whispered:
“No…”
Maya looked at him.
“Who else?”
Richard slowly turned toward Elena.
Elena’s face changed.
Richard whispered:
“Ask your sister.”
Elena froze.
Maya stared at her mother.
“What does he mean?”
Elena said nothing.
And for the first time all night—
she looked afraid.
