“Anna…” the woman repeated, her voice hollow.
The name echoed like a ghost from the past.
The man stepped closer.
“You know her, don’t you?”
The elderly woman didn’t answer right away.
Instead, she slowly sat down, her strength fading.
“I knew her,” she finally said. “A long time ago.”
The girl took another step forward.
“She knows you too,” she said quietly.
The woman looked up sharply.
“That’s impossible.”
The girl reached into her worn coat and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper.
“My mommy told me to give this to you… if I ever found you.”
Her hand trembled as she held it out.
The old woman hesitated… then took it.
Slowly, she unfolded the paper.
Her eyes scanned the words—
and within seconds, her entire expression collapsed.
Tears filled her eyes.
“What does it say?” the man asked.
The woman couldn’t speak at first.
When she finally did, her voice was broken.
“She wrote… ‘You didn’t just take my ring… you took my life.’”
The girl watched her carefully.
“She said you blamed her for something she didn’t do.”
The woman shut her eyes tightly.
“I was wrong…” she whispered. “I thought she betrayed me… I thought she stole from me first.”
The man frowned.
“So you took the ring as revenge?”
The woman nodded slowly.
“And I destroyed everything she had.”
The girl’s voice softened.
“She never hated you.”
That hit harder than anything else.
The woman looked up, shocked.
“She… didn’t?”
The girl shook her head.
“She just wanted you to admit the truth.”
A long silence followed.
Then the woman made a decision.
With shaking hands, she removed the ring and placed it in the girl’s palm.
“I’ve carried this guilt my whole life,” she said. “Take me to her.”
The girl hesitated.
“She’s leaving the city today,” she said. “If we don’t hurry… you might never see her again.”
The man immediately stepped forward.
“Then what are we waiting for?”
The old woman stood up, determination replacing her fear.
For the first time in years—
she was ready to face her past.
And maybe…
finally make it right.
